The 1225 locomotive, known as the Pere Marquette is a class "N-1" 2-8-4 "Berkshire" type steam locomotive first built in 1941

We have found the ultimate Christmas centrepiece for families who love a holiday showstopper. This huge 36 Piece Christmas Express Large Scale Train Set With Real Smoke is spectacular - and there's something timeless about a big train circling the tree. It's G-gauge, which means it has size and presence, and when you fire it up? There's smoke puffing from the locomotive stack, that classic headlamp glow, and the sound effects are just joyful. Our children absolutely love watching the animated skaters on the "Happy Holidays" car go around while the whole set plays Christmas songs.

The details on this train set are gorgeous too. Matte colours of deep red, green, black, gold accents...just magical. There's 4 carriages with whimsical festive art - one says "Noel" with coal in tow, another is a caboose with little toy passengers bobbing past every window, plus a boxcar decked out in Santa and his reindeer. The track is oval shaped at 1.54m x 1.29m (though you can rearrange them into a circle or new design if you like), so it's perfect under your main tree or creating a winter wonderland along your buffet or lounge.

Oh! And the best bit? This is based on the real 1225 Pere Marquette locomotive from 1941, so there's proper nostalgia built right in. There's also a ton of extras - road signs, decorative signs and little printed ornaments to customise it all for that family touch.

We've found this to be one of those Christmas decorations you bring out every year without fail. Children and guests just gravitate to it (we must admit we do too). It fits seamlessly alongside greenery garlands or tinsel display. This train set looks particularly grand with modern neutrals for contrast but really feels at home with traditional pinecones and nutcrackers too.

The whole set needs batteries (not included) and it does take some assembly but we think building it adds to that excitement - getting everyone involved while waiting for carols to start or Nanna to arrive! And just watching it move around? It really helps us slow down during such a hectic time of year. We end up having those moments where someone grabs another gingerbread cookie, stands quietly by this train set and takes in how magical this season can be.

It does contain small pieces so children under 3 years old should not play directly without supervision but older ones will adore setting things up then pressing play on those sounds!
